PROPOSAL // Statement of Project Parameters
Content
/ To use the perceptible to express the imperceptible. I intend to utilize
light to map sound, thus creating an illusion of space through time. The sound that will be mapped is Eric
Whitacre’s Alleluia. This piece was
selected because it shares the concept of using the perceptible to describe the
imperceptible. Alleluia (Hallelujah) means, “praise be to God.” In the act of
making sound, the tangible human being calls to the existence of the
intangible; a God outside of our concept of time and space. The song will be
mapped on a triple-axis grid. The x-axis will note the vocal section. The
y-axis will be the range of the note scale (1-10). The z-axis will be utilized
to describe the dynamics (loudness/softness) of the note. The grid will not be visible, so as to give
freedom to the concept of space as the philosopher Immanuel Kant describes it. The
format will be video, and it will open with quote to situate the audience for
what they are about to view.
Audience
/ Those who are intrigued by transcendence.
Goals /
To manipulate light with sound in drawing parallels between that which can and
cannot be expressed.
Research
Bibliography / I will be using sheet music records and the Internet to gather
the materials needed. The sheet music to be used to map the light will be Alleluia,
by Eric Whitacre.
Resources / Pioneer Public Library System and the Internet will be important
sources of information. Tutorials on lighting effects will also prove to be a
crucial tool.
Technical Issues / I will be learning new skills within Adobe After
Effects. I also haven’t figured out how to visually calculate trills, flips,
and dissonance within the vocals.
